Gastric Sleeve Weight Loss

How much weight will I lose after gastric sleeve surgery?

Weight loss after gastric sleeve surgery doesn’t happen overnight, but the results can be life-changing.

Most patients lose weight gradually and steadily. Here’s a general idea of what to expect:

Time after surgery
Typical weight loss
1 month
Around 10% of your excess weight
3 months
Around 30% of your excess weight
6 months
Around 60% of your excess weight
12 months
Around 80% of your excess weight
Let’s say you’re carrying an extra 40 kg—by the end of the first year, you could lose around 28-32 kg.

Obviously, results are different for everyone, but the key to success is staying consistent with your diet, exercise, and follow-up care.

The best part? It’s not just about the number on the scales—it’s about how much better you’ll feel in your body, mind, and everyday life. It is about health gain rather than weight lost

First few weeks after sleeve gastrectomy

What to expect in the early days

The first few weeks are all about healing and adjusting to your new stomach.

Here’s what happens:

  • Hospital stay: You’ll spend 1–2 days in hospital so we can keep an eye on you and make sure you’re comfortable. Nausea and pain are managed and you are able to drink fluids well.
  • Diet changes over 6 weeks: You’ll start with clear liquids in the first 24hrs after surgery then move to thin nourishing fluids. You remain on these fluids for 2 weeks before upgrading to a puree diet for 2 weeks and then to soft foods for another 2 more weeks. It might feel challenging at first, but it’s temporary—and it gives your stomach time to heal.
  • Getting back on your feet: Light walking is encouraged soon after surgery to get your body moving. You’ll need about 2 weeks off work before you’re ready to get back to office type duties. For more physical work, it usually takes about 4 weeks before you can return usual duties and certain exercises and gym workouts… and more demanding jobs, 6 weeks off maybe required

As you recover, you’ll need to make some changes to how and what you eat:

  • Smaller portions that are packed with nutrition
  • Sipping fluids slowly throughout the day to stay hydrated
  • Focusing on protein to keep your energy up and maintain lean muscle mass

These changes might feel big at first, but trust us—they’ll become second nature with time and support.

One of the best things about gastric surgery is how it improves your overall health. Along with the weight loss, you’ll likely notice:

  • Health conditions improving or even disappearing—things like diabetes, sleep apnoea, and high blood pressure.
  • More ability: You’ll feel lighter and more capable, with a new sense of freedom to move, play, and live.
  • Better emotional well-being: Anecdotally, many patients say “it is the best thing they have ever done”. They feel more confident, happier, and excited about life.

It’s not just about fitting into smaller clothes (though that’s nice too)—it’s about getting your health back.

It’s normal to experience some side effects as your body adjusts. Here’s what you might encounter:

  • Nausea or vomiting: This usually happens if you eat too quickly or don’t chew well. Take it slowly—your new stomach will thank you.
  • Feeling tired: Rapid weight loss and lower calorie intake can make you feel a bit drained early on. It takes a bit of time but this gets better as your body adjusts.
  • Hair thinning: It’s temporary! As long as you keep up with your nutrition, your hair will bounce back within a few months.

These little bumps along the way are completely normal, and we’ll work together to manage them.

After gastric sleeve surgery, what you eat becomes key to your success. It’s about finding a balance—eating for nourishment, not habit, and working closely with our dietitian to stay on track.

  • Protein first: Foods like lean meats, fish, eggs, and legumes will keep you full longer and help maintain muscle mass during weight loss.
  • Hydration matters: Sip water slowly throughout the day and avoid sugary drinks, which can sneak in empty calories.
  • Lifelong supplements: Because your smaller stomach absorbs fewer nutrients, taking multivitamins and supplements will be part of your routine to keep your body healthy.
  • Avoid processed foods: Focus on whole, nutrient-dense meals and steer clear of processed snacks and liquid calories like creamy lattes.

“Your dietitian is your secret weapon in this journey. Staying in touch, especially during the first 12 months, ensures you’re meeting your nutritional needs and staying on track for long-term success.”

Adjusting to social situations after gastric sleeve surgery can feel tricky at first—whether it’s dining out with friends or attending family gatherings. Suddenly, the way you eat is different, and it’s easy to feel out of place.

  • Portion control: One of the most important skills is learning how much is “just enough” for your new stomach. A smaller plate, mindful eating, and chewing slowly can help you stick to the right portions without feeling overwhelmed.
  • Staying confident: It’s normal to feel self-conscious when others notice how little you’re eating. Remember, this journey is about your health. You don’t need to explain yourself to anyone.
  • Finding support: Surround yourself with family and friends who understand and support your new habits. It makes a world of difference when your loved ones cheer you on.
